I love children’s books and, as he gets older, our son is really starting to appreciate our collection as well. Recently I’ve been setting aside a little curated selection for him each season so he can easily find the books we have on that theme. It’s a great way to keep things fresh and (re)introduce a new favorite, especially when he gets hung up on reading the same books every night. There’s also a sense of anticipation – especially around the holidays – and he gets excited each time we update the seasonal basket!
Here are some of our favorite books to enjoy in spring:
- Clifford’s Happy Easter – Clifford has some mishaps with dye as he helps prepare for an egg hunt. Our son got excited about Clifford after seeing the cartoon, but he loves the books and they’re priced very reasonably, even in Japan.
- Happy Easter, Curious George – George gets up to his usual antics at an egg hunt, causing a bit of drama and then saving the day! We can’t get enough George around this house, so he makes an appearance for just about every theme.
- Make Way for Ducklings – A classic story about a pair of ducks trying to find a suitable place to settle down in Boston, but finding that urban living presents some unexpected challenges.
- Spring Green – A sweet story that I
stoleborrowed from my parents’ collection about a group of animals searching for green items they can bring with them to a spring-themed party. - I am a Bunny – This book also finds its way into many collections, since Nicholas the bunny takes us through all four seasons, but it’s one of my favorites so I’m happy to include it.
- かず (shapes) – We love this series of books, featuring a darling yellow chick and his friends, which teach a lot of basic toddler vocabulary – colors, shapes, numbers, vehicles, animals – with cheerful illustrations. These palm-sized board books are also perfect to keep in your bag when out and about.
- Guess How Much I Love You – Mostly included in this collection because its characters are a family of hares, this book is fun to read together at any time of year.
- Marshmallow – Another classic, this one about a little white bunny adapting to life as a house-pet and making a friend of the cat who shares his home.
- The Tale of Peter Rabbit – Poor Peter learns the hard way that his mother’s warning not to wander into a nearby garden is justified and keeps our preschooler on the edge of his seat throughout the adventure.
What are your favorite books for this time of year?
